The Human Eye

The eye is a highly developed extension of the brain. It is able to process our surroundings in the form of light particles and then create images so that we can see. Each part of the eye is a specialized structure with its own function:

The Cornea the transparent, front layer of the eye which helps to focus light to the back of the eye, this focusing ability is important in maintaining clear vision
The Lens the oval shaped structure in the center of the eye which also focuses light to the back of the eye, this is where cataracts can grow
The Retina the back layer of the eye made up of nerve cells which process light and transmit information to the brain, this is how an image is created
Optic Nerve the extension of nerve cells from the retina which connects the eye ball to the brain
